Black Horned Night Heron

A International Dog Production

In Association with

For those of you who don’t know me – I’m Mara Ditchfield Greene, I set out two years ago to become a film maker; not just any old Hollywood type,  but rather a a global one. That brought me to New York University’s Tisch Asia in Singapore.  Next year I will graduate with an MFA in film direction. Since arriving at Tisch Asia I have successfully shot two narrative short films and one documentary. All can be seen here on my blog. My first film, Closure, was selected to premier at the Martha’s Vineyard Film Festival in the United States last March.

During a family trip to Cambodia last April I was inspired to write my next film, Black Horned Night Heron. My time in and around Siem Reap and Angkor Wat proved that the spirit of Cambodia does not live in its past but rather resided in it’s future and it’s children’s future. The film (which I’ve written and will direct) follows two young boys as they navigate their world taking on the challenge of survival, the hope for a better future and the boundless dreams  that ring true across all cultures.

We are currently seeking your support! Currently we are already US$3225 closer to our ultimate goal of US$10,500. We go into production on November 28, 2011, but it is never too late to donate. All supporting individuals or companies will be represented on my  blog (if they so choose) and credited in the final film, which will be entered into film festivals world-wide and presented in both Singapore and in the United States. Funding details can found at the foot of this blog post.  I appreciate your time in watching and thank you in advance for your support.

Black Horned Night Heron is the tale of Heng, 10-years-old, a tender young boy living in a small Cambodian village near Beng Mealea temple. After seeing his the depiction of his mother’s death on the news and desperate to revive her memory Heng decides he must buy the old television for sale in the village general store. He is convinced that this old TV is the conduit, which will upon purchase bring her back to life. He has enlisted the help of his cocksure, proud entrepreneur best friend Mao, who is also 10-years-old, and the brains behind their scheming to help him. Mao, however, sees a grand business opportunity.  They secretly give tours and sell sodas at Beng Mealea temple to raise the money to purchase the television. Black Horned Night Heron takes place on the day that their scheming pays off and their haggling comes to an end but not because of their wits but because of Heng’s desperation. But once the TV is theirs everything changes.

What starts as a childish dream between two friends turns into much more; the new TV puts their friendship in the balance. Heng must destroy it to free his mother’s soul, whereas Mao sees it as a business opportunity like no other.  Their friendship frays – like a rope twisted too tight – as they must come to terms with who they are individually and to each other. Equal footing must be found, but at what cost?

Black Horned Night Heron is a story of humanity. What those boys decide to do, where the adventure leads, and the lasting effect it has on their friendship will shape their lives forever. A film with the heart of Rob Reiner’s Stand by Me and the energy of Danny Boyle’s Slumdog Millionaire; Black Horned Night Heronis a coming of age story that captures the struggle, excitement, and determination of the first generation to come of age in post Khmer Rough Cambodia.

The 2011 Singapore Challenge

Posted on

There is this new scale in Singapore that tells you how aged your body is – it takes your weight, your height and your body fat index and with some fancy algorithm it says (in it’s condescending digital voice): “Mara Ditchfield you’re 42.” Your actual birth year is irrelevant thanks to the genius that is the “Body Age Scale.”   Well I say: screw that! I’ve devised a far more accurate measurement. My algorithm, we’ll call it ‘The Screw Your Fancy New Conceptions Scale,” goes like this: chase 413, 20-year-old polytechnic students around Singapore for 10 hours while carrying all your own equipment. You take your average speed, divide by the weight of the equipment carried, multiple by your decelerating excitement level (Morning = 100  X Pi to the Nth divided by Afternoon = 0 X Leave me alone) then add on the number of Red Bull Energy Drinks consumed over the course of that 10 hour period.  Put it in a bag, shake it up and you get your answer. Apparently my body is older that 22. Damn.

Last week I was hired to film and then edit together The 2011 Singapore Challenge for The Singapore International Foundation. They requested a two to three minute video and a 30 second trailer. The idea was based on the Amazing Race . . . just limited to Singapore. . . which is kind of small. Regardless, this was my first paying gig! Here is the result:

From Gideon’s Perspective

This week I don’t have any embarrassing anecdotes. I didn’t spill any coffee on myself, no elderly Chinese men yelled at me, except the normal friendly folks around Chinatown; and I say that with the least bit of irony. It’s true; there is a Chinatown, in Singapore and we live in it. Nope nothing embarrassing to report… Oh yeah, except the part of the week I spent rolling around our local park – Fort Canning pretending to be Gideon, while Gideon himself sat ideally by watching with uncertainty and our newly encountered dog-walking acquaintances offered me mood stabilizers.   There was that part of the week.

Enjoy the video!

Some Free Time

It’s writing when I don’t feel like it. It’s picking up my camera in the morning even though my breakfast was milky soft boiled eggs rather than Puffins and black coffee. It’s following an impulse through, a feeling, a simple action without commitment. It’s having fun. It’s free time. It’s free writing. It’s free exploration. It’s investigating myself, scrutinizing my aims, and observing my new city. And I’m inviting you to join me. It might be as simple as eating Fish Head Bee Hoon for the first time or as complicated as trekking the outer banks of Cambodia but either way I’m guaranteed to embarrass myself at least once a week. So even if your not interested in my short films, maybe I can lure you in with my everyday Not-Really-but-sort-of-All-American-Girl in a foreign land antics.  Just this morning I tripped up the stairs to Pearl Hill Park while walking Gideon with a giant cup of hot coffee in my hand. I smacked straight into an old Chinese man with a communist upper lip curl who yelled at me in a language I’m pretty sure is gibberish but apparently 6 billion people call it Mandarin, I returned the pleasantry by flashing a half-cocked grin that was inhibited by my eyes that couldn’t hide the burning sensation from the coffee sizzled through my tank. And it’s only Tuesday.

So here goes nothing:

Jon’s birthday surprise videos – I ripped off of They Live by John Carpenter, which as the week progressed merged with M from James Bond 007.  Giving us a M lives for 007? Which fused into M lives for Jon Greene 007, which melted into M lives for Agent Jew, which deteriorated into Super Agent Pickle initiates Agent Jew into the war against the killer zombie beasts with the formal approval of the world wide network of Special agents.  I told you I’m bound to make an ass out of myself at least once a week. Observe:

Surprise #1 – Saturday June 4, 2011 – God Save Us All

Surprise #2 – We Can All See Now

Surprise #3 – World wide Agent network
